We’re Glad You’re Here! Here are some answers to your important questions…


GIRLS:  Solid-colored dresses or jumpers, collared shirts, or crew neckline shirts worn with pants or shorts. Dresses, jumpers, skirts and shorts must be a maximum of 3 inches above the knee.

BOYS:  Solid khaki, navy blue, or black pants or shorts. Shirts should have collars, in solid colors only-no prints or pictures.

Every Friday is a Spirit Day. Students may wear jeans with a GHES t-shirt, AR (Accelerated Reader) t-shirt, or Field Day t-shirt. You may purchase a GHES t-shirt by completing a form located in the front office, or you may download a t-shirt form online.

Leggings, printed leggings, tutus, tank tops, halters, spaghetti straps or clothing with pictures or messages are not permitted.

While not required, clothing with our embroidered  with GHES logo is available at, Lands’ End carries the Garden Hills logo: if you shop online under their School Uniforms Category, our Preferred School Number is 900134719.

BY BUS: Bus routes and times will be posted online by the end of July. Click here for a link to the APS Transportation page. All students who registered by the Summer Registration period in mid-July can locate their bus stop online and at the school by Open House/Celebration of Learning. Students who did not register by the Summer Registration period can use the nearest bus stop until they receive a permanent bus stop in August after school begins. If your bus is late on any given day, you may call the school office and check on its status: 404-802-7800.

BY CAR or ON FOOT: You can pick up a carpool number at the Carpool station at Open House/Celebration of Learning. Should you miss it, you can also get a carpool number in the front office once school begins. Carpool numbers can be hung on your rear view mirror for easy identification in the carpool line, or brought with you for identification at the walkers’ door. Carpool Pick-up is at the front entrance to the school. Students will be released at 2:45 pm and the carpool line moves fairly quickly, so it is important to be prompt. Any students not picked up by 3:15 pm will be taken to After School care for a fee.

For the safety of the children, it is important that all cars stay in a single file line. Please do not park in the carpool line during carpool hours. If you need to enter the school, park in the parking lot or on Rumson Road and use the walkway access. In the mornings, it is also important that all students be dropped off at the front entrance of the school. Again, for the safety of the children, please do not drop any students off near the buses, at the back of the school, or near AIS (Atlanta International School).

If your child is a walker, after-school pick up will be at the top of the covered stairway leading from gym to the main building. The walkway to the covered stairway is located at the electronic Garden Hills marquee at the front of the school. Please bring your child’s carpool number to show at the door.

It is very important to communicate any change in transportation to your child’s teacher and the front office!



Once school starts, you can find the menu for breakfast and lunch online at APS. You may send money with your child – cash only please. We cannot accept checks. You may also set up a prepaid account for them at MySchoolBucks. You will need your child’s student ID number, which may be obtained by calling the front office at 404–802-7800, or simply by contacting your student’s teacher with your request. Of course, you may also pack a lunch!

My child has allergies… If your child has an allergy that requires medication (EpiPen, Benadryl, etc.) to be stored at school, there are several forms that need to be filled out by you and your child’s doctor. Please contact the front office or school nurse to obtain these forms, fill them out, and return them to school as soon as possible. Arrangements in the classroom and cafeteria will be determined on an individual basis. There is a peanut-free table in the cafeteria for those who have peanut allergies.


The After School Program is an “after care” program for students whose parents need their child to stay for a while after school, up until 6 pm. During this time, they will do their homework, receive a healthy snack, and have supervised activities and free play. The After School Extracurriculars Program, also organized by Kiddos Atlanta, offers a series of after school activities such as art, science, chess, and sports for a reasonable extra fee. Information about these activities will be sent home in the first weeks of school. If your child normally goes to the After School Program, they will be returned to the After School Program once their extracurricular activity is complete.  See Kiddos Extracurriculars for more information.


All Kindergartners should purchase an orange Garden Hills Elementary T-Shirt. For $10, these orange shirts are worn on every Field Trip and serve as an identity tag for them when they’re out and about on the town. White logo shirts with orange neck and sleeve ringers and solid orange t-shirts are also available for older children– students can wear jeans on Fridays if accompanied by a Garden Hills t-Shirt. Child sizes are $10 each, Adult sizes are $15 each.You may purchase a GHES t-shirt by completing a form located in the front office, by downloading a t-shirt form online, or by purchasing it through our School Directory once you’ve signed up.


Spirit Night is held once a month at a local restaurant that has pledged a portion of the evening’s profits to the school. You can drop in at any point during the allotted time– usually 5 pm-8:30 pm. Wear your GHES shirts to show your school spirit! The dates and locations for each month will be announced ahead of the event.


The PTA is our Parent-Teacher Association, and the core of our school family! We ask that every family join the PTA, because it benefits all of us– students, teachers and parents alike. The dues ($10 per member) are used in support of our teachers, the purchase of materials for incentive programs and field trips, and for events we hold throughout the year. While Garden Hills is a Title 1 school, meaning it receives extra funds from the school system based on the amount of children who receive free or reduced-rate lunch, those Title 1 funds are targeted for very specific areas. With a large PTA, we can do so much more, and choose what we do!

We also call on our PTA members to volunteer– whether you can support us with a case of water for an event, for example, work at the event for an hour or two, or choose to serve on a committee, we value your support! Please send an email to signupgenius@gardenhillselementary.org and let them know you want to be added to our volunteers list.

The PTA Board meets once a month throughout the year. Everyone is invited to attend these board meetings, which will be announced in advance. It is a great way to be informed about the fun events in store for our school community! There will also be three General Meetings for the PTA members over the course of the year. To accommodate parents’ schedules, General Meetings will take place either in the morning as soon as school starts and last a very short time, or in the evening to coincide with a school-wide family event. In addition, a paper newsletter will go home in backpacks on Fridays. Known as the Friday Flyer, this newsletter will contain important information about the upcoming week, a calendar of the month’s events, and teachers’ birthdays. If you should miss a Friday Flyer in your child’s backpack, it will be posted on our website each Friday.
